Trouble Shooting
The trouble shooting in Powder Coating can be categorized in various stages of operation i.e. Phosphating, Fluidized Bed Operations, Venture Operations, Electro – Static Operation, Collection & Recovery Operation, Insufficient Coverage, Insufficient Output of Powder, Cured Film Physical Properties & Disturbances in Cured Film. However, here only trouble shutting for a cured film is given, as the final finished quality is most important for any profile.
Disturbance in Cured Film problems and Causes
- Contamination with incompatible materials i.e. silicons
- Oil still present on metal surface. Contamination with other powder
- Gun positioned wrong
- Air flow in booth disturbing spray patterns
- Defective spray equipment
- Heat rate too slow or too fast
- Powder too coarse.
- Heat damaged of powder
- Film thickness too high
- Poor pretreatment
- Under curing
- Change in substance
- Under curing
- Powder resin system
- Poor pretreatment
- Film thickness too high
- Change in substance type
- Under curing / Poor resin system
- Uncharged powder
- Poor pretreatment
- Poor dry off
Tips
Since the surface finishing of powder coating largely depend on various factors. Hence we recommend few helpful suggestions for on going powder coating process.
Pre-treatment (surface preparation) for any metal is backbone for any powder coating process
- Checking of chemical pointage every day or after substantial use it is must to keep bath active
- Proper water rinse after every chemical tank, also do keep fresh water changing as per usage
- To avoid over phosphate layer keep tank sludge free
- To avoid any mis-handling give operator proper hand gloves, eye glasses & rubber shoes
Paint Booth & Spray Gun
- Always keep paint booth grounded with proper earthing
- Check motor rotation for recovery booth to minimize powder loss
- Always insure charging of spry gun regularly
- Check powder flow & air pressure to insure perfect coating
- Check air fluidization in hopper to pass powder smoothly
- Keep hooks Colour free to avoid any current leakage
Oven (Furnace)
- Keep oven dust free to avoid any color contamination
- Periodically oven calibration is recommended to insure perfect curing
- For equal air distribution inside oven check fan rotation position
- Install fire fighting equipments near oven area to avoid fire accident
- Check oven meter (Control Panel) for correct meter reading
Powders
- Check packing seal, color name & product code before using
- Do not mix two different brands of powder to avoid bad surface finish
- Always wear a mask while coating or sieving the powder
- To achieve perfect finish & curing refer to product catalog or product data sheet of material
- Follow guided thickness to achieve perfect finish guided by product manufacturer
- Keep powder in dry below 27°C & dust free area to protect shelf life of powder
